“Exploring Jazz and its African Rhythms”

The Wendell Harrison Jazz ensemble

This dymanic performance by Wendell Harrison, “Exploring Jazz and its African Rhythms”, features original compositions as well as seductive sounds from Senegal, Caribbean, and New Orleans. The performance will contrast the different expressions of Black life, and also define and illuminate rhythms from the three music styles, Blues, Reggae, and Samba, which tell stories of the African linkage. However, the presentation will produce jazz concepts and language in a gala and celebration style, inspiring spontaneous dancing, which will be encouraged.
During the performance, The Wendell Harrison Jazz Ensemble will also explore music from rituals, spiritual, dance and celebrations. The instruments and musicians used are Pamela Wise- piano and vocals, Pathe Jassi -acoustic bass and vocals, Louis Jones,-drums Jacob Schwantz- guitar, Benny Rubin- Alto Saxophone, Ingrid Racine trumpet, and I will be playing saxophone and clarinet (six musicians). This project, “Exploring Jazz and its African Rhythms” will increase the understanding of the three contributing cultures through music. Moreover, this invigorating presentation will inform as well as educate audiences to rhythm and harmonic tonalities associate with the three cultures of this African diaspora. Some of the music performed will be compositions by Pamela Wise, Pathe Jassi, and Wendell as well.
