The Wendell Harrison's Mama's Lickin Stick Ensemble

Wendell Harrison’s Mama’s Licking Stick Clarinet Ensemble brings an abundance of exciting styles and variety of music including classical and jazz from a traditional as well as contemporary public sphere. The music repertoire includes Wolfgang Mozart, Claude Debussy, Scott Joplin, Alan Menken, Duke Ellington, and internationally recognized original compositions by Wendell Harrison. This ensemble performs for special events, concerts and festivals throughout the USA and beyond. Wendell has performed at prominent venues, including festivals and universities all over the world. Now in the fifth decade of his career, award winning jazz master Wendell Harrison presents new concepts in sounds and textures with his clarinet family that features Josh Pittman and Lorenzo Macuja on soprano clarinet. Deborah Scales is featured on alto clarinet and Wendell playing soprano and bass clarinet representing the aggregate of the ensemble. The ensemble also features internationally known guest such as Don Byron and Howard Johnson from time to time and often write and arrange for the group. An array of recordings are available. Mama’s Lickin Stick Clarinet Ensemble:
History
This eloquent ensemble was established in 1989 to perform and express the rare sounds of wooden clarinets. The leader and organizer, Wendell Harrison writes and arranges the compositions for the group illuminating his originals, as well as music by jazz maters such as Duke Ellington, Billy Strathorn, Charlie Parker and Sidney Bechet. Also, featuring some of concepts of John Coltrane. Mama’s Lickin Stick Ensemble has six clarinets from clarinet family, which includes: contra bass, bass, alto and two sopranos Bb and Eb. In addition, the group performs and records with a rhythm section, acoustic bass, piano and drums most of the time. Some the recording and performances have featured Don Byron on clarinet and James Carter on Contra bass clarinet. EnJa Record Company in Munich Germany, released a very successful recording –Rush and Hustle which was a release from the Rebirth Record label. The group recorded on several of Wendell Harrison’s CD and DVD releases such as “Live in Concert” and “Forever Duke”. The Mama’s Lickin Stick Ensemble conducted master classes and residency, teaching clarinet technique, improvisation and jazz history throughout America.
